SAINT LEO, Fla. – After another successful week of unblemished play, the Saint Leo volleyball team has moved up to the 14th spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national top-25 poll released earlier this week. The Lions also got another bit of good news on Thursday afternoon as the NCAA released their first regional rankings report, and the Lions found themselves in the top spot of the powerful South Region.
Nationally, Saint Leo moved from 16th last week to 14th in the current poll after weekend sweeps over Nova Southeastern and Bentley. This ranking sets another record for the highest slot the Lions have been on the national poll. The highest Sunshine State Conference school is the University of Tampa in the 9th spot as Eckerd stays at No. 22 while Lynn and Florida Southern are receiving votes. NCAA South region opponent West Florida hangs on to No. 24 and West Alabama received votes as well.
Regionally, the Lions are a perfect 12-0 in the South Region as they edged the University of Tampa for the top-spot. The Lions swept the Spartans in a Sunshine State Conference showdown on October 3rd in Tampa; it marked Saint Leo’s first-ever win over Tampa in 57 meetings.
West Florida sits in third spot while SSC foes Lynn, Eckerd, Florida Southern, Florida Tech, Barry and Nova Southeastern sit fourth through ninth respectively. The Gulf South Conference’s West Alabama rounds out the South Region’s top-10. The Lions have posted wins over all the South Region teams in the top-10 except for West Alabama.
The next rankings from the NCAA will be handed down on October 29th.
