SAINT LEO, Fla. – It was an early morning wake up call for the fans in Green & Gold, but fortunately for SLU, their volleyball team was ready to play as the #14 Lions handed visiting #24 West Florida a 3-0 (25-19 25-23, 25-23) defeat in non-conference action from the Bowman Center on Friday morning.

Saint Leo (19-2) outmuscled the visitors from Pensacola in the first set as the Lions earned the lead from the first point, built a three-point cushion early on, and did not let West Florida (13-9) back into the set.

Sets two and three were carbon copies of each other as sloppy play from the Lions allowed the Argos to build a small advantage in each game.  In both sets the advantage for UWF was as much as four points at 18-14 in the second, and 14-10 in the third, and both times the Lions rallied to have regained the lead by the time the score hit 20.  Relying almost entirely on the right arms of juniors Emily Calderon-Reyes and Bruna Rocha, the Lions held off late Argonaut rallies in each of the two frames as UWF pulled to within 24-23 both times.  SLU pushed the deciding kill through each time en-route to the victory.

In picking up their record-setting 16th-straight win, the Lions saw Calderon-Reyes light up the scoreboard with 17 kills and a .483 attack percentage to go along with 10 digs, marking her seventh double-double of the year.  Rocha, the other Lion with double-figure kills, notched 11 as both players posted service aces as well.

Calderon-Reyes also registered two solo blocks as the Lions tallied nine team blocks in the match.

As a team, the Lions hit .248 for the match while West Florida rebounded from a .032 performance in the first set to finish with a .212 attack percentage.

Saint Leo will now travel to Winter Park as they will face Harding University in a neutral-site match being played at Rollins.  Gametime is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Warden Arena in the Alfond Sports Center on the Rollins Campus.
