GOLDEN, Colo. - The exciting start to the 2009 season for the Saint Leo volleyball team is now a distant memory as they watched the Colorado School of Mines hand SLU a 3-0 loss in the final game of the Holiday Inn/Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colo. on Saturday evening.
The only highlight for the Lions (3-1) came in the first game as SLU rebounded from a 5-1 deficit to take a 14-12 lead, at which point Saint Leo looked to have control of the game, but Mines would rewrite the script for the remainder of the match.
The Lions pushed to a 17-all tie before the hosts went on a 6-3 run to put themselves in a position to steal Game One. After falling in the first game it was almost as if the wind came out of SLU’s sails as the Orediggers seemingly handled the Green & Gold for the remainder of the match, a setback which saw Mines walk off with the sweep.
Individually, the only highlight came from newcomer Emily Calderon-Reyes who shed her kneepads and proceeded to drop down 16 kills and hit .306 as she attempted to lead the Lions back into contention, but it was not to be.
The Lions will head back to the Sunshine State on Sunday as they now turn their attention to the Florida Southern Classic which begins on Friday, September 4th. SLU will face the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Bemidji State University in Lakeland, Fla.
