GOLDEN, Colo. - The Saint Leo volleyball team posted a perfect Friday as they earned a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 29-27) win over Mesa State at the 2009 Holiday Inn Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colo.
After the Lions (2-0) basically breezed through the first two sets, their opponents would attempt to try and claim Game Three from the Lions as they took a 21-19 lead into the final few points. Mistakes by Mesa State and clutch plays by the Green & Gold would bring the Lions even at 22 but the Mavericks had a chance to finish the set off as they had a 24-23 lead, sending the set to game point.
The Lions would rebound off a kill by Danielle Bletso to draw even and then another attack error from Mesa gave the Lions the lead. Saint Leo would eventually get that magic two-point advantage when Kaitlin McKenna and Leah Perry blocked a Maverick attack to claim the match.
Three Lions posted double-digit kills with Emily Calderon-Reyes and McKenna posting 11 each and Bletso joining in with 10. McKenna also had a solo stuff and three block assists as well as hitting .529 for the match.
Senior setter Michelle Nogueras added five kills, eight digs and her standard 34 set assists. Defensively, newcomer Bruna Rocha, who chipped in seven kills, was the only Lion with double-digit digs at 11.
Saint Leo takes their unblemished record into day two of the tournament which is hosted by the Colorado School of Mines. The Lions will face Fort Lewis College at 3:00 p.m. EDT and then end their visit to the Mile-High Region by facing the tournament hosting Orediggers at 9:30 p.m. EDT.
