MIAMI SHORES, Fla – The Saint Leo University volleyball team has posted their fifth victory in six matches as they defeated host Barry University 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-8) from the Health and Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
Barry (10-6, 2-5 SSC) got things started in the opener as they stormed out to an 11-3 lead in set one. Saint Leo (23-7, 4-5 SSC) began to chip away at the Buc lead, getting to 19-16 led by three Chelsea Armer kills. However the Bucs were able to close out the first set, 22-25.
The Lions led much of the second set getting to leads of 7-2 and 14-9 before the Buccaneer offense began a comeback. Three Lion errors and nine Barry kills helped the Bucs close out set two 25-20.
After rebounding to win set three 25-23, and set four 25-17, the Bucs and Lions squared off for a fifth and decisive set.
In set five, Saint Leo got out to a quick 10-1 lead with the help of eight Buccaneer mistakes. After a Saint Leo point, two BU kills got the Bucs to 11-4, but Saint Leo tightened down to prevent any comeback. Barry and Saint Leo would score four more points apiece, and the Lions would win, 15-8.
For Saint Leo, Jenna Jordan had 15 kills and Michelle Nogueras had 44 assists. Meanwhile, The Buccaneer hitters combined for 58 kills and Libby Walter has 47 assists.
The Lions continue Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday as they travel to face the University of Tampa in a 7:00 p.m. match. The game will be broadcast on the Saint Leo Lions Audiocast network.
