Saint Leo, Fla. (August 20, 2008) - The Saint Leo University volleyball team found themselves just outside the top-25 in the 2008 American Volleyball Coaches Associations preseason rankings released on Tuesday evening.
Earning 45 votes, Head Coach Sam Cibrone's team find themselves behind Sunshine State Conference foe Lynn University, who earned 49 as the first team out of the top-25. This is another first for the breakout volleyball program that also received a first-place vote in the conference preseason rankings for the first time in history.
The top spot in the first poll of 2008 went to last year's National Champion Concordia-St. Paul who finished with a 36-4 record. The highest ranked Sunshine State Conference school was 2006 National Champion Tampa who was ranked seventh, two spots ahead of Florida Southern.
The only other SSC school in the top-25 was Nova Southeastern receiving 81 votes and earning a 24th spot on the poll.
The Lions square off against five ranked teams with the highest spot going to West Texas A&M as they sit in the fifth spot and face Saint Leo in St. Petersburg on September 20. In addition to the Lions' annual home and away battles with Tampa and Florida Southern, SLU will also face 21st-ranked Ashland on August 29.
