St. Petersburg, Fla. (November 1, 2007) - It was almost a mirror image of the first time these two teams matched up at Saint Leo in late September as Sophomore Michelle Nogueras’ (Cayey, Puerto Rico) triple-double wasn’t enough as the Saint Leo University volleyball team (24-9, 6-6) lost a heartbreaker in five sets to the Eckerd College Tritons (22- 8, 8-5) Thursday night in St. Petersburg (30-27, 28-30, 25-30, 30-19, 8-15).
The Lions opened up the match on a positive note taking the first game 30-27. Sophomore Chelsea Armer (San Jose, Calif.) led the Lions with six of her twenty kills in the first game and freshman Kaitlin McKenna (Farmington Hills, Mich.) added four kills of her own.
The second and the third game saw the Eckerd College Tritons storm back to take a 2-1 match advantage. The Lions had their opportunities in game two to come out on top but weren’t able to hold on to a 19-14 lead halfway through the match. The Tritons stormed back to take a 25-22 lead and they never looked back. The third game saw a back and forth struggle as the Tritons and Lions traded the lead back and forth. The Tritons would gain a lead at the midway point of the game and were able to hold off resilient Lions’ effort in taking the 2-1 match lead.
The Lions most dominating performance came in game four when they jumped out to a dominating 27-11 lead and cruised to a 30-19 victory. The Lions couldn’t capitalize on the momentum of the game four victories and came up short in the fifth game.
The Lions were also led by Sophomore Jenna Jordan (Plant City, Fla.) who added 11 kills and 10 digs of her own. Armer also added 13 digs and Senior Eni Lukas (Budapest, Hungary) contributed with an outstanding 25 digs and chipped in two service aces. The Lions defense recorded nine blocks on the night but the strong offensive and defensive wasn’t enough to overcome the Eckerd College.
The Lions return to Sunshine State Conference action this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Marion Bowman Center for senior day against the University of Tampa.
