Saint Leo, Fla. (September 30, 2007) – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (15-6, 1-3 SSC) fell 3-2 to visiting Eckerd College (12-5, 3-3 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference match at the Marion Bowman Activities Center Sunday afternoon. The Tritons won the five-game encounter with game scores of 22-30, 30-28, 30-18, 20-30 and 15-9.
Saint Leo sophomore setter Michelle Nogueras (Cayey, Puerto Rico) had her second consecutive triple-double, and third of the season as she had 56 assists, 17 digs and 11 kills. A total of five Saint Leo players registered double-digits in kills, and the Lions hit .256 as a team compared to the Tritons .222 hitting percentage.
Eckerd’s Lydee Benoit led all players with 16 kills, and finished with 12 digs for a double-double.
The Lions won the opening game, breaking a 15-15 tie midway through the game and eventually winning by the eight-point margin. The Tritons led throughout game two, but the Lions closed the gap late and eventually took their first lead of the game at 28-27. However, Eckerd scored the final three points of the game to even the match at 1-1.
The visitors took the lead with a convincing win in game three, but Saint Leo battled back to force a fifth and decisive game with an equally convincing 30-20 win in game four. Eckerd took control of game five from the start, eventually closing out the match with a 15-9 win.
Saint Leo will travel to Tampa, Fla. to take on the top-ranked Spartans on Tuesday night in another Sunshine State Conference match (7:00 p.m.).
