Saint Leo, Fla. (September 27, 2007) – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (15-5, 1-2 SSC) edged Palm Beach Atlantic (10-10) in five games on Thursday night in non-conference action at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.  The Lions defeated the Sailfish with game scores of 32-30, 24-30, 30-27, 28-30 and 15-10.

Saint Leo was led by sophomore setter Michelle Nogueras (Cayey, Puerto Rico) who registered her second triple-double of the season, and third of her career with 57 assists, 14 digs and 12 kills.  Kim Nuckols (Fr., Upperville, Va.) added a double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs.

In addition to Nogueras and Nuckols, three other Saint Leo players had double-digits in kills led by freshman Kaitlin McKenna (Farmington Hills, Mich.) with a game-high tying 15.  Chelsea Armer (So., San Jose, Calf.) and Leah Perry (Fr., Salem, Ohio) added 12 kills apiece.  Saint Leo libero Amanda Cook (Jr., Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) had a game-high 30 digs.

The Lions scored seven of the first eight points in game one, but the Sailfish battled back and eventually tied the score at 29-29.  However, SLU was able to outlast PBA and get the victory 32-30 in the opening game.

The Sailfish evened the match with a victory in game two.  Palm Beach Atlantic outscored Saint Leo 14-2 midway through the game to open up a lead of 20-10, and the Lions could not rally in the final stages.

A 10-1 run propelled the Lions to a lead midway through game three, and although the Sailfish closed to within one with a 6-0 run of their own, Saint Leo held on for the two-point win.  Palm Beach Atlantic forced a fifth and decisive game with a 30-28 win in game four.  In the fifth game, the Lions broke a 3-3 deadlock and never trailed again en route to a 15-10 win.

Saint Leo will return to Sunshine State Conference play in its next match, as the Lions will host Eckerd College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
