Winter Park, Fla. (September 21, 2007) – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (13-4, 0-1 SSC) opened its Sunshine State Conference schedule with a five-game loss at Rollins College (10-6, 2-1 SSC) on Friday night. The Tars outlasted the Lions with game scores of 30-26, 25-30, 25-30, 32-30, 15-7)
Saint Leo had five players registered double-digits in kills, led by Chelsea Armer’s (So., San Jose, Calif.) match-high tying 17. Leah Perry (Fr., Salem, Ohio) added 14 kills with Audrey Starkebaum (Jr., Haxtun, Colo.) totaling 11 and Kaitlin McKenna (Fr., Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Michelle Nogueras (So., Cayey, Puerto Rico) registering 10 kills each.
The Lions fell behind the match, as Rollins took game one 30-26. However, Saint Leo battled back to win games two and three by the same 30-25 scoreline. SLU won the first four points of game four, but Rollins closed the gap quickly and the see-saw battle ended with the Tars forcing a fifth and deciding game.
In the final game, Rollins went on an 11-4 run to close out the match and pick up its second conference win of the season.
The Tars were led by Lorena Orlandiini’s 17 kills, with Piper Young adding 15 kills. Saint Leo hit .277 as a team compared to .240 for Rollins and the Lions also had a 16-6 advantage in total team blocks.
Saint Leo will look to even its conference record tomorrow when it travels to Melbourne, Fla. to face Florida Tech. The match is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
