Saint Leo, Fla. (August 28, 2007) – Led by 20 kills apiece by Kim Nuckols (Fr., Upperville, Va.) and Chelsea Armer (So., San Jose, Calif.), the Saint Leo volleyball team (5-0) swept a pair of matches with Webber International University (4-1) and New York Institute of Technology (0-3) on Tuesday night. The Lions defeated Webber 3-0 (30-21, 30-14, 30-28) before wrapping up the sweep with a 3-0 win over NYIT (30-14, 30-20, 30-16).
Nuckols finished with a combined 20 kills, and hit a scorching .571 in the two matches, while Armer had 20 kills with a hitting percentage of .378. Saint Leo hit .392 as a team in the two matches. Defensively, senior Eni Lukacs (Bradenton, Fla.) finished with 15 digs in the two matches.
In Saint Leo’s first match of the evening, the Lions hit .437 as a team to sweep the Warriors in three games. Both Nuckols and Kaitlin McKenna (Fr., Farmington Hills, Mich.) hit over .700, as Nuckols had a match-high 14 kills, while McKenna added 10 kills. The Lions led early in all three games, although the third game proved to be a closer encounter before Saint Leo won the final two points to take the 30-28 decision.
The Lions took control in their second match from the get-go, as Armer hit .474 and finished with a match-high 12 kills. Freshman Natalie Gaudreau (Venice, Fla.) also registered double-digit kills with 10, while the Lions totaled 21 service aces in the match.
Earlier in the afternoon, Webber defeated New York Tech 3-1 (30-13, 30-27, 21-30, 30-18) in the first match of the tripleheader at the Bowman Center.
The Lions will return to action this weekend in Lakeland, Fla., as they will participate in the Florida Southern Classic. Saint Leo will face Lees McRae College on Friday at 11:00 a.m. before taking on the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Pittsburg State University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
