Valdosta, Ga. (September 1, 2006) - The Saint Leo University volleyball team stretched its winning streak to four matches with a pair of wins at the Valdosta State University Volleyball Classic Friday.
The Lions turned back Presbyterian College in four games by scores of 30-28, 20-30, 30-25, 30-19 and Augusta State University in four games by scores of 30-20, 30-13, 29-31, 30-25.
The Lions increased their record to 4-1 on the season, heading into Saturday's final match at noon against Coker College. Augusta State, fresh from going 4-0 in the Trojan Invitational at Anderson, S.C., last week, fell to 5-2. Presbyterian dropped to 3-2.
Leading the way against Presbyterian were outside hitters Chelesa Armer (Fr., San Jose, Calif.) with a double-double, collecting 16 kills and a like number of assists; Erin Oberlin (Sr., Naples, Fla.) with 14 kills and a .286 attack percentage; and Audrey Starkebaum (So., Sterling, Colo.) with 10 kills.
Setter Michelle Nogueras (Fr., Cayey, Puerto Rico) had 42 assists and a .538 hitting percentage.
Against Augusta State, the Lions were once again led by Armer and Starkebaum, who had 20 and 15 kills respectively. Starkebaum had 13 digs and a .448 attack percentage.
Nogueras once again directed the way from her setter spot with 43 assists. The Lions finished the match with a team hitting percentage of .313. They hit .429 in the first game and .650 in the second game.
