Saint Leo, Fla. (November 15, 2006) – Saint Leo volleyball freshman Michelle Nogueras (Cayey, Puerto Rico) was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association South Region Freshman of the Year on Wednesday.

“Michelle has been an outstanding addition to our program, and was really influential in helping us reach new heights this season,” head coach Sam Cibrone said. “She is an all-round performer and brings positive energy to the team. I am proud to see her receive the recognition she deserves.”

Nogueras set a new Saint Leo volleyball program record during the 2006 season, as her 10.80 assists per game eclipsed the previous mark of 10.48 held by teammate Jessi Lynn (So., Brandon, Fla.). The native of Puerto Rico totaled 1,166 assists in 30 matches played.

The Lions’ setter was a threat all over the court in 2006, as she contributed 130 kills and hit .246 while ranking second on the team in digs (263) and third in blocks (51). Nogueras also had a triple-double during the year with 10 kills, 48 assists and 16 digs against Barry University (10/21/06).
