Saint Leo, Fla. (November 7, 2006) – The Saint Leo volleyball team (21-10, 8-8 SSC) has been selected for its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II National Tournament, it was announced by the NCAA on Tuesday morning.  The Lions will face SSC foe and ninth-ranked Florida Southern College on Thursday at noon in a South Region opening round match.


The University of Tampa is the top-seed for the South Regional and will host all matches, beginning with Thursday's opening round.  The Saint Leo-Florida Southern match will be broadcast live on the Internet via the Saint Leo Athletics Audiocast Network.

Saint Leo set a new program record for single-season victories in 2006.  The Lions also finished tied for the third in the Sunshine State Conference with an 8-8 mark, while posting a regional record of 12-9.

Meanwhile, Florida Southern shared the Conference Championship with top-seed Tampa, and earned the third-seed in the South Regional.  The Moccasins swept the season series from the Lions, including a 3-0 win in the regular season finale in Lakeland, Fla. on Saturday.

The winner of the Saint Leo-Florida Southern match will advance to the semifinals and meet the winner of the Florida Gulf Coast-University of South Carolina-Aiken match at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.  The Championship match will be played on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.  Tickets for the NCAA South Regional are $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students with ID.
