Saint Leo, Fla. (October 12, 2006) – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (17-6, 5-4 SSC) defeated Puerto Rico Rio-Piedras (12-3) on Thursday night in a five-game thriller at the Bowman Center. The Lions won by the scores of 27-30, 30-23, 27-30, 30-27 and 15-10.
Saint Leo’s comeback was ignited by senior outside hitter Erin Oberlin (Naples, Fla.) and junior middle back Liz Moore (Minnetonka, Minn.). Oberlin contributed 13 kills and hit an astounding .545. Moore added 7 kills and hit .636. Saint Leo hit .268 as a team and had 14.5 blocks.
The Lions were able to take control of the match in game four, by storming back from a 13-6 deficit, to take the lead at 23-22. They were then able to rattle off 7 of the next 12 points to clinch game four. Saint Leo was able to ride the momentum of the fourth game win to seal the match with a 15-10 scoreline in favor of the Lions in the deciding game.
Saint Leo remains at home on Tuesday, October 17 for a matchup with Seton Hill University (7:00 p.m.). The game will be broadcast live on saintleolions.com.
