Saint Leo, Fla. (October 7, 2006) – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (16-5, 5-3 SSC) defeated Puerto Rico-Mayaguez by sweeping them in three games in a match Saturday afternoon, then went on to squeak by Kutztown University in five games in the nightcap.
Saint Leo swept the games in the first match by the scores of 30-17, 32-30, and 30-22, and they won by the scores of 30-18, 29-31, 25-30, 30-26, and 15-13 in their second match of the day. In earlier action, Kutztown defeated Puerto Rico-Mayaguez by the scores of 30-23, 21-30, 30-16, and 30-22 in what was one third of a volleyball tripleheader played at the Bowman Center on Saturday.
Against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, Saint Leo was paced by senior outside hitter Erin Oberlin (Naples, Fla.) who totaled a match-high 17 kills and an impressive .483 hitting percentage. In match two for the Lions, freshman setter Michelle Nogueras (Cayey, P.R.) set the tone with 9 kills, 9 digs, 4 blocks, and a .412 hitting percentage. She added 63 assists and was the sparkplug that ignited the Lions comeback from a 2-1 game deficit in the match.
Saint Leo hit .294 as a team against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez and .171 as a team against Kutztown. The Lions were able to cruise to victory in their first match of the day in three straight games, but they were battled to the end in the nightcap by Kutztown. Kutztown took a 2-1 lead in the match after winning the third game 30-25, and seemed to have the match in hand with a sizable lead in the fourth game of the match. However, Saint Leo stormed back and captured the fourth game, and they were able to hold on and protect their home turf with a win in the fifth game 15-13 that sealed the victory.
Saint Leo next plays at home on Tuesday night in a key conference match against Florida Southern (7:00 p.m.).
