Saint Leo, Fla. (October 4, 2006) – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (13-5, 4-3 SSC) fell 3-1 to the visiting No. 4 ranked University of Tampa (19-1, 7-1) in an SSC match played at the Bowman Center on Wednesday night.
Tampa’s four-game victory ended Saint Leo’s three-match winning streak, as the Spartans won by scores of 30-8, 28-30, 30-23, 30-20.
Spartan outside hitter Erin Clark led all players with 18 kills, as Tampa hit .230 as a team to complete a season sweep of the Lions. Saint Leo was led by freshman Chelsea Armer (San Jose, Calif.) who recorded her fourth straight double-double with 17 kills and 19 digs.
Tampa cruised to a victory in the opening game, but the Lions came back strong with a victory in the second game to tie the match at one game apiece. The Spartans pulled away late in game three after a see-saw battle early on, and then won the final game en route to their 19th victory of the season.
Saint Leo will host a pair of matches on Saturday, October 7, as the Lions will face Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at 3:00 p.m. and Kutztown University at 7:00 p.m. Kutztown will also face Mayaguez earlier in the day at 1:00 p.m. as part of a triple-header at the Bowman Center.
