#14 Softball opens regional play with North Alabama Thursday

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The 14th-ranked Saint Leo softball will open up their NCAA postseason play against defending national champion, North Alabama, Thursday, May 11 at 12 p.m. at University Softball Stadium. The Lions will be the first of two games Thursday.

Saint Leo (37-13) earned the no. 2 seed in the South Region and will host four teams no. 3 seed Alabama-Huntsville (41-15), no. 6 seed Lee (33-18), and no. 7 seed North Alabama (30-18). This will mark the first time in program history Saint Leo will host a softball regional.

NFCA All-South Region - Read the Release
Saint Leo, who won their second consecutive Sunshine State Conference title and the SSC automatic qualifier, saw senior hurler, Stephanie Adkins, and freshman second baseman, Kacie Kelly, earn National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) First Team All-South Region honors after their stellar performance all year. Adkins and Kelly were two of three Sunshine State Conference (and it's provisional members) athletes selected to the All-Region teams.

Adkins and Kelly helped lead the Lions to a 17-7 record in conference and a 37-13 record overall. Saint Leo posted a 31-10 record in the region and will look to add to that at home; while at home, the Lions own a 13-4 record.

SSC Awards- Read the Release
Kacie Kelly and Stephanie Adkins highlighted the SSC awards as Saint Leo swept the individual awards for the second straight year. Kelly was named the SSC Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year while Adkins was named the SSC Pitcher of the Year. Both Kelly (second base) and Adkins (pitcher) were selected to the First Team All-SSC and were joined by Ciera Schumaker (third base) and Rachael Heath (outfield).

Danielle Bottley (utility) and Alison Mitts (pitcher) were selected to the Second Team All-SSC. Head Coach Erin Kinberger was named SSC Coach of the Year for the second time in her career, and second consecutive time.

Kinberger has guided her teams to 37 wins or more in her third straight season. Kinberger has tallied 39-12 and 39-8 records in her first two seasons and looks to build on their 37-13 mark heading into the postseason. The 37 wins heading into the postseason marks the 17th time in program history the team has eclipsed the 30 win mark and 11th time they have recorded 35 or more wins.
