Ohmie named SSC Softball Player of the Week

SSC Release

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo softball senior Samantha Ohmie was named the Sunshine State Conference Softball Player of the Week for games ending April 30. Ohmie garners one final award of her career as the regular season is completed, and the honors are concluded for the 2017 season.

Samantha Ohmie finished the weekend 6-for-9 from the plate for a .667 batting average to help the Lions improve to 37-13, 17-7 SSC. The 2-1 series win pushed pressure to SSC foe Tampa who fell to Florida Southern, which allowed the Lions to claim the SSC title for the second consecutive season. With the win, the Lions earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.

Ohmie drew three walks and tallied five singles while hitting one home run for a .750 on-base percentage and a 1.000-slugging percentage. The Simi Valley, Calif., native drove in four runs on the weekend while scoring two herself.

In the fourth inning of the second game of the series, Ohmie dug into the batter's box with a 1-1 count, trailing 5-1, and blasted a two-run home run to right center bringing the game to a 5-3 contest. Saint Leo would score once more in the inning to cut it to 5-4 prior to an 8-8 tied game in the middle of the seventh.

Amanda James tried to steal the spotlight on senior night as she blasted her first career home run to right center, for a grand slam in walk-off fashion as the Lions went on to win 12-8.

This is the second honor of the season for Ohmie as she earned her first of the year on February 26th, while this is the sixth Sunshine State Conference weekly honor for the Lions this season. Ohmie joins Alyssa Wash (April 10), Stephanie Adkins (April 3 & 10) and Kacie Kelly (March 27).

Saint Leo will await the 2017 NCAA Division II Softball Selection Show, held at 10 a.m. on May 8th to determine their postseason.
