Four run 7th haunts #9 softball at PBA

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh put the ninth-ranked Saint Leo softball team ahead of Palm Beach Atlantic by three-run heading to the bottom of the seventh before the Sailfish scored four to walk-off past the Lions 6-5 Friday night to open the three-game series at Simpson Field.

In a regional contest with Adkins versus Adkins on the mound, Saint Leo (Stephanie Adkins) and Palm Beach Atlantic (Ashton Adkins) battled in a tight game that came down to the wire. The Lions (34-11) struck first in the second inning before the Sailfish (29-15) answered in the bottom half of the inning.

Brittany Creamer singled to left field scoring Samantha Ohmie to put the Lions ahead before an error at third by Ciera Schumaker allowed Maddie Bertisch to tie the game at 1-1.

A sacrifice bunt by Shelby Wood allowed Magnolia West to score from third pushing the Sailfish ahead by one, 2-1, after three innings.

A 2-1 score would remain the case heading into the sixth inning, where the Lions plated two to take a 3-2 lead. Samantha Ohmie hit what would've been the final out of the inning to right field where the fielder dropped the third out and allowed Ciera Schumaker to score from second, where Ohmie pulled into second. Olivia Prieto came in to pinch run for Ohmie and came in to put Saint Leo ahead 3-2 on a Sarah Pauscher double to left center.

With a one-run lead, the Lions were looking to add insurance runs in the seventh inning. Saint Leo scored two more to extend their lead to 5-2 after Kacie Kelly singled to left field scoring Creamer and Bailey McKenna ripped a hard shot down the left field line for a stand-up double scoring Kelly.

Four runs in the bottom of the seventh saw the Sailfish walk-off win against the No.9 Saint Leo Lions. Palm Beach Atlantic scored one run on a West single before a double down the left field line plated two tying the game at 5-5. Wood singled to left center allowing Bertisch to come around and end the game at 6-5.

Stephanie Adkins (19-6) pitched the complete game and allowed six runs, five earned, with two walks and six strikeouts.

Brittany Creamer finished the game 2-for-2 from the plate with one run scored and one RBI, while Bailey McKenna was 1-for-1 in her pinch-hit appearance with a double and a RBI. Sarah Pauscher finished the game 1-for-2 from the plate with one RBI and a double. Ciera Schumaker added the final extra-base hit with a double for her lone hit of the night.

Saint Leo will return to Simpson Field Saturday, April 22 to face Palm Beach Atlantic at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
