Adkins, Wash garner SSC Weekly Honors

SSC Release

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo senior, Stephanie Adkins, and sophomore Alyssa Wash were named Sunshine State Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week following their play that led to the Lions 3-0 week for games ending April 9.

Both Stephanie Adkins and Alyssa Wash helped Saint Leo improve to 34-7 on the year and move to 15-3 in the Sunshine State Conference after a three-game sweep of Florida Tech in Melbourne on April 5-6.

Adkins (19-3) picked up two wins in the circle for Saint Leo after pitching four innings in game one and then returning to the circle to pitch the complete game shutout in the series finale. Adkins ended the week with a 0.78 ERA in nine innings of work. The Orlando, Fla., native, allowed eight hits and just one run on the week with nine strikeouts.

In game one of the series, Adkins threw four innings and allowed just one run on three hits, where in game three she held the Panthers scoreless for all five innings despite allowing five hits. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Adkins let the first three runners get aboard before two force outs at home plate and a strikeout blanked the Panthers to end the game in the fifth inning. Michelle George picked up her pitcher throwing out the first runner and home after a bloop single to right center before Samantha Ohmie fielded a grounder and threw out the next runner at home. Adkins sat down the final batter with a swinging strikeout to end the contest.

Alyssa Wash ended the week with a .600 batting average after going 6-for-10 from the plate. Wash started all three games where she tallied four runs, five RBI and tagged 11 bases. Wash finished the Florida Tech series with a 1.100-slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage after hitting two doubles and a two-run homer in the series. While on the base paths, Wash finished 2-for-2 in stolen bases while recording six putouts in right field for the Lions.

Wash's first double of the series came in the second inning of game one, which drove in Danielle Bottley. In game two, Wash hit a two-run jack to right field scoring herself and Michelle George to extend the Lions lead to 6-0 before Saint Leo scored another for the 7-0 final. In game three, Wash wrapped up her week going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI after her fifth inning double down the left field line scored George made it a 9-0 game before the Lions made it an 11-0 final.

This is the first honor of the season and career for Wash and is Adkins' second of the season (April 3) and fifth of her career. The duo join Samantha Ohmie (February 26) and Kacie Kelly (March 27) to make the Lions total to five on the season.

Saint Leo returns home this week to host Tampa April 12-13 at University Softball Stadium. The Lions and Spartans kick off their Sunshine State Conference series at 6 p.m. Wednesday before a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. wraps up the series on Thursday.
