Softball climbs back to No. 8 in latest NFCA Poll

SAINT LEO, Fla. – After Saint Leo softball posted a 4-1 week with two wins over then-No. 18 Caldwell, the Lions moved up three spots to No. 8 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Coaches Poll, announced Wednesday. 

The Lions (25-7, 6-3 SSC) started last week off with two wins over then-No. 18 Caldwell 5-0 and 12-3 (5 innings) before taking the Sunshine State Conference series against Lynn two games to one. The Lions dropped the first game 1-0 in nine innings Friday night to kick off the series before bouncing back to take both ends of the doubleheader Saturday.

Saint Leo won game one Saturday 4-1 before earning a 7-4 victory over the Fighting Knights to end the weekend with a 2-1 series win.

On the week, the Lions saw Alison Mitts (6-3; 1 sv ) go 2-0 on the mound with a 0.50 ERA over three appearances. Mitts pitched 14 innings allowing 13 hits with just one run scored while striking out nine batters. Stephanie Adkins (13-3; 2 sv) finished the week with a 1-1 record and one save in 15 innings of work with a 0.93 ERA. Adkins picked up 12 strikeouts surpassing the 100 strikeout mark on the season, moving to 110 on the year. Sara Neuman (5-0; 1 sv) went 1-0 on the week with 5.2 innings of work with three strikeouts. 

From the plate, Rachael Heath led the team with a .533 batting average on 8-of-15 from the plate. Heath finished with a .533 slugging percentage with one RBI and a .588 on-base percentage. Michelle George was second on the team in average with a .412 going 7-of-12 from the plate where she recorded 11 putouts in left field for the Lions. George led the team in RBI with seven on the week with three doubles and one triple from the box.

Samantha Ohmie and Ciera Schumaker both hit home runs in the two games against Caldwell, where Schumaker started game one off with a two-run homer in the first inning followed by Ohmie's game two three-run walk-off homer in the fifth inning.

Saint Leo will return to the diamond when they head to Auburndale, Fla. to take on Florida Southern for the SSC three-game series March 24 and 25. The Lions and Moccasins tango Friday at 7 p.m. before their doubleheader Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.
