#11 softball falls in nine innings to Fighting Knights

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A pitcher's duel between the Sunshine State Conference's top pitchers forced Saint Leo and Lynn into extra innings where both teams went scoreless through eight innings at the Lynn Softball Field. A single and a double in the ninth inning haunted the Lions as the Fighting Knights walked off to a 1-0 win.

The top two pitchers in ERA in the SSC, Stephanie Adkins (Saint Leo) and Francis Olexa (Lynn), would battle to extra innings before the Fighting Knights walked it off in the ninth inning. Adkins, the league leader in ERA and strikeouts continued her dominance with eight strikeouts Friday afternoon. Olexa, second in the SSC in ERA and fourth in strikeouts, retired seven batters via the 'K'.

Saint Leo (23-7, 4-3 SSC) saw Brittany Creamer and Michelle George go 2-for-4 on the day to lead the team as George had a triple in the game. Lynn (18-10, 7-3 SSC) was led by Mackenzie Wyatt who went 2-for-4 and scored the winning run.

Stephanie Adkins moves to 12-3 on the year in the circle for the Lions after the nine-inning complete game set back. Adkins allowed four hits, two of which were in the ninth inning, and recorded eight strikeouts. With the eight strikeouts, Adkins moves to 106 on the year and 270 in her two-year career at Saint Leo.

In the first inning, Adkins got out of trouble as she had the bases loaded with one out but got out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground out. Adkins recorded two strikeouts in the bottom of the first which were her 99th and 100th strikeouts of the year.

Saint Leo would put the pressure on as the Lions had bases loaded in the top of the second by the Fighting Knights' Francis Olexa retired three straight batters to end the top half of the inning.

Adkins would retire the next six batters before a one-out double in the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Ciera Schumaker would double to left center but the Lions couldn't get her across. Brittany Creamer hit a two-out triple down the right field line but again, the Lions couldn't get her across the plate.

Adkins would keep the stellar performance going as she only allowed one walk in the fifth inning before sitting down the last eight batters forcing the game to head to extra innings.

Saint Leo would get a runner on in the top of the eighth and the ninth but Olexa would get the Lions to fly out and line out to end both innings.

Adkins started the bottom of the ninth off with a strikeout and flyout before allowing a two-out single to left field. A double to left center would score the game-winning run from first.
