Lions Drop 2-1 Extra Inning Affair to Eckerd

George goes 2-for-3 in game one loss

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University softball team dropped its third straight game as Eckerd College handed the Lions a tough 2-1 loss, in extra innings, in the first game of its three-game Sunshine State Conference weekend series.

The Lions (23-16, 6-8 SSC) were held to just four hits on the night with two of those coming from Michelle George (2-for-3). McKenzie Burns went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, and Adriana Sanders was 1-for-4 with run scored and a stolen base in the loss.

The Tritons (20-19, 6-10 SSC) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kirby Parnell scored the first run of the game. Parnell got on base by way of a bunt to the pitcher and then advanced to second base on a throwing error by Sarah Steiner. Kara Oberer then singled to shortstop driving in Parnell who would score on the throw.

Saint Leo would quickly even the game up at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning. Sanders led off the inning with a bunt single to the pitcher, and then promptly stole second base. Burns would then move Sanders over to third on a ground out to the pitcher. Steiner then hit into a fielder's choice scoring Sanders for the Lions' only run of the game.

Eckerd threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning loading the bases with no outs, however Ashley Ehlers got back-to-back strikeouts of Alex Barone and Parnell, and then got Chelsea Jeffares to pop out to leftfield to end the inning.

Neither Eckerd nor Saint Leo would get anything going in the seventh inning, and Saint Leo would only get one hit in the top of the eight.

That led to the bottom of the extra frame where Erin Dixon wouldn't waste any time homering to right centerfield to end the game.

Steiner started the game and threw 5.0 innings, striking out four, and giving up one run on three hits. Ehlers would come in in relief of Steiner and pitch 2.0 innings, striking out three and giving up one run on three hits.

The Lions will close out their Sunshine State Conference weekend series against the Tritons on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
