TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (10-8, 0-1 SSC) fell to the No. 7 University of Tampa Spartans (8-3, 2-2 SSC), 2-0, Friday evening from the Vince Naimoli Softball Complex in Sunshine State Conference action.
Single's from Adriana Sanders, Cassie Boggs, and Chelsey Steedley is all Saint Leo could manage as Spartans hurler Kayla Cox controlled the Lions' normally powerful offense, not allowing a run over the next 7 innings en route to striking out 9 Lions.
Ashley Ehlers (3-1) was tagged with the loss as she surrendered two runs across four innings.
Tampa broke through with their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI doubled to right field and again in the fifth on a walk, which is all the Spartans need for the eventual 2-0 final.
The Lions will continue its SSC series with Tampa on Saturday, March 1 with a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Vince Naimoli Softball Complex.
