Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. – The Saint Leo University softball team (8-7) took the win against the Goldey-Beacom Lightning from Delaware (0-2) during game one Friday afternoon from the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Showdown tournament at Lake Catherine Stadium. The doubleheader featured a five-inning game in which Saint Leo defeated Goldey-Beacom by a score 23-1, just before Saint Leo defeated the Hosting team of the tournament Palm Beach Atlantic in extra inning in a heated contest 4-3.
The Saint Leo Lions warmed up some previously cold bats as they collected 25 hits on the day and stole a grand total of 12 bases. In addition, Saint Leo' pitching staff only allowed seven hits on the day.
In the first game, senior Sarah Steiner collected her fourth win of the season after allowing only one hit, one run and striking out three while only facing 11 batters in her 3.0 innings of work in the circle. Alana Tabel finished the last two innings facing eight hitters and allowing only one hit while striking out three.
On the offensive side, the Saint Leo Lions jumped on the Lightning in the first inning scoring four runs, second scoring five, two in the third and 12 runs in the fourth. Designated Hitter Angelsa Kafalas was on fire today. She went 4-4 with five RBI's and scored three runs. Kafalas had a double and a triple on the day. Sarah Steiner and Jessica LoBianco hit for doubles and Cassie Boggs had a triple. McKenzie Burns (2), Andriana Sanders (3), Chelsey Steedley, and Jami Schlecker total for seven stolen bases. Jami Schlecker was able to get her first hit, run, and RBI's of the season, going 2-4, two runs, and two RBI's on the day while playing 3rd base. Goldey-Beacom only run of the day came in the 1st inning by senior Ashley Zaccaria.
After defeating the Lightning in five-innings, Saint Leo would have to face the Hosting team of the tournament Palm Beach Atlantic and this contest would take eight innings to decide the winner.
Junior Ashley Ahlers got the start for the Lions, going 7.2 innings allowing five hits, three runs and striking out five. Improving her record to 2-0 on the year. Alana Tabel came in the bottom of the eighth facing one batter to shut-them-down and get the save (2).
The bats also came alive during the second game of the doubleheader, collecting another six hits with a triple coming from Cassie Boggs to center in the fourth scoring Jessica LoBianco. She pinch ran for Sarah Steiner who had drawn a walk. Brittany Ewing followed with a single to left scoring Boggs. In the top of the eighth inning McKenze Burns was placed on second base. Adrinana Sanders struck out swinging and reach first on the throwing error; however, Burns scored on the play giving the Lions the lead 3-2. Later, Cassie Boggs reached on a Fielder's Choice and was pinch ran for by Tiffany Thompson who then stole third and scored on another throwing error.
The Sailfish was able to get their runner who was placed on second across the plate. But, that was it. Tabel came in again and was able to get the last batter out and close out the game giving the Lions two wins on the first day of the tournament.
The Lions were able to get six hits, however, McKenzie Burns, Jessica Lobianco, Cassie Boggs, Tiffany Thompson, and Chelsey Steedley all record stolen bases this game for a total of five.
On the day the team had a batting average of .390 and scored 27 runs.
