CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (4-5) upset No. 5-ranked Armstrong Atlantic University in the last game of the Eckerd College Spring Invitational, Sunday afternoon from Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
Boggs' fifth inning, bases loaded triple tied the game at 3-3 and shifted the momentum and the Pirates were not able to answer back. In the fifth inning the Lions Tiffany Thompson scored the go-ahead run on a passed-ball which proved to be the difference as solid defense and steady pitching put down a solid Pirates' team.
Aside from Boggs' three RBI hit, McKenzie Burn went 1-3 with a run scored and a stolen base (5), Sarah Steiner walked three times and scored off Boggs' triple from first, Adriana Sanders scored, Tiffany Thompson scored and Rachel Heath had a stolen base. In total, the Lions collected seven hits on the day.
In the circle, Sarah Stiener (2-3) pitched well as she scattered six hits across four innings while striking out four and walking two getting the win. Ashley Ehlers came in the fifth and faced eight and only gave up one hit while allowing no runs or walks. To finish off the Pirates Alana Tabel entered the game in the top of the seventh and face their 2-4 hitters and shut-them-down, allowing no hits, walks or runs allowing her to get the save(2) in the upset victory!
The Lions will return to the field on Saturday, February 15, when they travel to Savannah, Ga., as they face off against the Mountain Lions of Mars Hill at 12:30 p.m. in the Armstrong Atlantic Tournament.
