Lions Split Opening Day of PBC-SSC Softball Challenge

Columbus, Ga. – The Lions enter the second day of the PBC-SSC Softball challenge looking to even things up against the #18 Columbus State Cougars.  The Lions came to life in the 3rd inning scoring three runs off of two hits including a double off the bat of Senior Brittany Ewing, putting the Lions up 4-1.  Later in the inning Sophomore Alana Tabel came in relief for Junior Ashley Ehlers.  Ehlers gave up 2 runs off of 5 hits for the day.  Tabel inherited bases loaded with no out.  The Cougars scored on a SAC fly to Right Field and Tabel gave up two ground balls to the infield to close-out the inning.  Later in the bottom of the 6th the Cougars were able to score off of Tabel, when Senior Sarah Steiner came in and shout down the inning, game was tied 4-4. The Lions show some life again, with Junior McKenzie Burn stealing second and Junior Adriana Sanders smashing her first Homer of the season giving the Lions the lead at 6-4.  The Cougars again were able to tie the game 6-6 in the bottom of the 7th inning forcing another extra inning game. The Lions score in the top of the 8th off a SAC by Sophomore Tiffany Thompson sending the Lion with the lead to the bottom of the 8th 7-6.  The Cougars once again were able to bounce back and get the lead and win off a two run homer in the bottom of the 8th off of Sarah Steiner.  The Lions were able to get 7 runs off of 9 hit on the day. 

In the Second game of the day, the Lions faced off against Lander University in the PBC-SSC.  The Lions score in the top of the 3rd off of no hits.  Junior McKenzie Burns scores off of a SAC of Senior Brittany Ewing, and Sophomore Jessica LoBianco walked and advanced to second and steals third and scores on an error giving the Lions the lead 3-1 in the top of the 3rd.  Top of the 5th the Lions wake up the bats in which Sophomore Christina Lodato singled scoring Senior Chelsey Steedley. The Lions scored again in the Top of the 7th when Steedley doubled to left field and later scored on a throwing error as Junior Torrie Weindorf reached first and then advanced to second.  On the day, Chelsey Steedley went 1-2 scoring twice, as both Brittany Ewing and Christina Lodato had the other RBI's in the game. 

On the Pitching side of the game the win went to Sophomore Alana Tabel putting her (1-1) on the year, the pitching staff only allowed one run on the day to claim the first win of the regular season.  As the team combined for 4 runs, 4 hits, and 9 base on ball in a big win to close out the Peach Belt Conference-Sunshine State Conference Softball Challenge in Columbus, Ga. 

The Lions are on the road again to the Eckerd College Triton Spring Invitational in Clearwater, Fla February 7-9.
