BOCA RATON, Fla. – Saint Leo University freshman Alana Tabel solidified her name atop the Sunshine State Conference's top performers in 2013 as the 25th-ranked Lions shut out Lynn University 11-0 behind her no-hit effort in five innings of SSC action from south Florida on Friday afternoon.
Tabel tossed her no-no as the Lions' bats remained hot, with Saint Leo (35-14, 15-4 SSC) tattooing the hosts' pitching for nine hits and seven walks. After a scoreless first inning, the Lions busted the game open with a seven-spot in the second and continued to add to the total before its mercy-rule conclusion at the end of the fifth inning.
Picking up her 14th win of the season, the freshman from Loxahatchee, Fla. dominated the Fighting Knights' (19-26, 5-14 SSC) batters behind four strikeouts and five innings of work where she needed just 47 pitches. This marked the first no-hitter for Saint Leo Softball since Ashley Urbanik tossed a no-no against Eckerd in an eerily similar 11-0 win on March 26, 2008.
Saint Leo posted back-to-back mercy rule victories behind a 3-for-4 effort from senior Rachelle Gremo who tallied two RBI and two runs scored. Every Lion starter reached base in the conference series-opener as Saint Leo also capitalized on three Lynn fielding miscues.
The Lions will continue the SSC series tomorrow morning when they square off with Lynn in doubleheader action starting at 10 a.m.
