SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (16-15, 2-5 SSC) fell to the No.19 University of Tampa Spartans (22-3, 7-0 SSC), 3-0, Friday evening from the Vince Naimoli Softball Complex in Sunshine State Conference action.
A leadoff single by Alex Garris is all Saint Leo could manage as Spartans hurler Deanna Henriottt controlled the Lions' normally powerful offense, not allowing a base runner over the next 6.1 innings en route to striking out 17 Lions.
Megan Still (6-9) was tagged with the loss as she surrendered three runs across six innings.
Tampa broke through with their first run in the top of the second inning when Megan Burke stepped to the plate and belted her second home run of the season over the leftfield fence.
The Spartans added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning as Burke and Katlyn Raatz connected on back-to-back run scoring hits to push the advantage to its eventual 3-0 final.
The Lions will continue its SSC series with Tampa on Saturday, March 17 with a St. Patrick's Day doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Vince Naimoli Softball Complex.
