Softball Splits On Day Two of Diamond Sun Classic
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (11-7) took home a Saturday split on day two of the 2012 Diamond Sun Classic, hosted by the ESPN Wide World of Sports. Saint Leo downed Kentucky State, 13-5, in the opener before falling to No.25 Flagler College, 3-0, in the game two.
Against Kentucky State, the Lions pounded-out 14 hits as they claimed their fourth mercy rule victory of the season. Meanwhile, Saint Leo faced a cold spell in game two as they were shutout for the first time this season in a rematch with No.25 Flagler College.
Still, Saint Leo collected 18 hits as a team, including a team-high six from Alex Garris. The Lions' junior right fielder also posted a team-best four runs scored. Ali Lamb added her name to the double-digit hit list as she went a combined 3-for-6 with three RBI. Rachelle Gremo also made her mark at the plate as she went 3-for-7 with two runs scored. Brittany Yates and Danielle Moreda chipped in with two hits apiece. Diane Gonzalez made her one hit count as her double drove in three runs.
Game one was an offensive explosion for the Lions as they scored a season-high 13 runs. Highlighted by two, five run innings, Saint Leo connected on 14 hits, including four doubles.
Game two saw another stellar pitching performance by Megan Still, but the Lions' offense could not match the effort as the Lions were shutout for the first time this season. Flagler collected runs in the first, third, and sixth innings to secure the win. Lamb's two-RBI single got things rolling in the first inning which was soon followed by three-straight RBI singles to give Saint Leo a 5-0 lead.
With Kentucky State using the long ball to stay within reach, Lamb and the Lions kept playing small ball as her second consecutive RBI knock gave Saint Leo a 6-2 lead. After getting the game to 6-5, the Lions exploded for five more in the fourth inning as Gremo, Moreda, and Gonzalez registered back-to-back base hits to make the score 11-5. The Lions shut the door on the Thorobreds in the fifth as consecutive doubles by Garris and Yates allowed Gremo to knock home the eventual game-ending runs.
Ashley Ehlers collected her first collegiate win as she tossed three innings of no-hit relief.

Garris went 2-for-3 in the loss. Still allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out four.
The Lions were a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases.
The Lions will return to action on Sunday, February 26, when they close-out action at the 2012 Diamond Sun Classic, hosted by the ESPN Wide World of Sports. The Lions will see No.2-ranked North Georgia at 10 a.m., followed by a contest with No.3-ranked West Texas A&M at noon.
