SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (5-4) dropped a pair of regional contests on the final day of the Eckerd College Spring Invitational, Sunday afternoon from the Eddie C. Moore Complex. The Lions fell in the morning contest, 6-4, to Nova Southeastern, before being upended by Georgia College, 7-3.
The Lions held a 1-0 lead over NSU in the opener before a three-run fifth inning sparked the Sharks to a come-from-behind win. Meanwhile, two, three-run innings by Georgia College paced the Bobcats to the four-run win.
McKenzie Burns led the Lions with four hits and three runs scored, while Brittany Yates and Rachelle Gremo finished with three and two hits, respectively. Danielle Moreda and Dianne Gonzalez shared the team lead in RBI with two.
The Lions stole the first run of the ballgame against Nova Southeastern as a double steal allowed Burns to take home. However, four hits by NSU in the top of the fifth led to three runs as the team took a 3-1 lead. Saint Leo answered in the bottom of the inning as a two-RBI single by Moreda tied the game at three. Unfortunately, three runs by the Sharks, including a two-run home run by Saladrigas, over the last two frames gave Nova Southeastern enough runs for the victory.
Megan Still took the loss for the Lions as she fell to 1-1 on the season.
Game two looked promising at the start as the Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Gonzalez drew a bases loaded walk to score Burns. The lead was short lived as Georgia College registered six runs over the opening two innings off of starter Kristen Kelly (2-2). The Lions were kept off the scoreboard until the seventh inning when Gremo and Yates scored each singled and scored to cut the lead to 7-3; the eventual final.
In relief of Kelly, freshman Ashley Ehlers threw well as she tossed in 4.2 innings. She scattered three hits and allowed one run.
The Lions were 6-for-6 in stolen bases, but left 15 runners in scoring position.
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, February 15, when they host regional foe Flagler College in a doubleheader. The games will begin at 4:30 p.m.
