Saint Leo Rebounds from Game One Loss, Honor Five At Senior Night Event
SAINT LEO, Fla. – After falling in game one, the Saint Leo softball team (25-29, 9-16 SSC) sent their five seniors out in style with a 7-1 victory over the Eckerd College Tritons (15-39, 3-21 SSC) in the regular season finale, Thursday night from University Stadium.
The Lions quickly responded from their shutout defeat in game one as they combined to score seven runs over the span of two innings to down the Tritons in their Sunshine State Conference finale.
Prior to the doubleheader, however, the softball program and the Saint Leo Department of Athletics took to time to honor five Lions as Ana Castillo, Jaime Walker, Sarah Boyd, Ashton Whidden, and Elysha Agen donned the Lions' uniform one final time.
On the field, the Lions outhit the Tritons, 16-12, as six players collected two or more hits. Ali Lamb led the group as she went a combined 4-for-6 with two doubles and two RBI. For the Tritons, Eckerd struck for runs in the fourth and sixth innings. A leadoff single by Chelsea Jeffares proved to be the difference in the game as she eventually came around to score on an RBI single in the fourth.
Eckerd then capitalized on the lone error of the game in the sixth inning as Kelly Coston scored on a throwing error.
Alex Sasso scattered seven hits and did not allow a run over the span of seven innings.
Game two, despite falling behind early, eventually belonged to the Lions. Saint Leo began its comeback in the fourth when they platted four runs.
After loading the bases with no outs, Diane Gonzalez tied the contest at one apiece as Agen crossed the plate on Gonzalez's RBI groundout. Lamb and Castillo then connected on back-to-back RBI singles, before Kasey Postupack capped the inning by scoring on double steal.
The squad increased their 4-1 lead in the sixth inning when Lamb scorched a one out, RBI double to centerfield scoring Boyd. After Castillo's RBI single made the score 6-1, Garris roped an RBI base hit to push the score to its eventual 7-1 final.
Kristen Kelly dominated in the circle as she set a new career high for wins in a season with 10. She tossed 6.0 innings, allowed one earned run while striking out four in the win.
Jaime Walker cleaned up the contest as the senior tossed an inning of scoreless ball.
The doubleheader also saw the Lions successful on 11 stolen base attempts to bring their season total to 111.
