Lions Hold Late Lead, but Tars Rally for Win, 5-2
Fifth-Ranked Rollins Completes Series Sweep with Four-Run Seventh
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Posting four runs in the top of the seventh inning, the No.5 Rollins College Tars (45-2, 22-1 SSC) overcame a late-innings, 2-1 deficit to sweep the season series from Saint Leo (23-28, 7-14 SSC) by the score of 5-2, Friday afternoon from University Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 for the majority of the contest, Lions' junior third baseman Danielle Moreda roped a two out, two-RBI single into leftfield to give the Lions a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning.
Despite the momentum shift, the Lions could not close the door on the lead. In the top of the seventh inning the nationally ranked visitor's answered with four runs on four hits to steal the victory.
Monica Meadows game-tying RBI single, as well as Krista Rodden's two-RBI double highlighted the frame for the Tars and put the game out of reach for the Green & Gold.
Hope Bitzer took the Lion down in order in the seventh as she improved to 18-0.
The Lions collected five hits in the SSC tilt, including two from Brittany Yates. Moreda was 1-for-3 with two RBI while Ashlee Sismilich and Amber Marty each connected on singles.
Seeing a trio of pitchers enter the circle, Jaime Walker was tagged with the loss as she dropped to 3-7 on the season.
Lions' starter Kristen Kelly held the hot-hitting Tars at bay for much of the afternoon as she tossed 6.1 innings, surrendering two earned runs on five hits. Megan Still threw up zeros in 0.2 innings of mop-up duty.
In total, the Lions left four runners on base.
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, April 27 as they open a three-game home series with conference foe Eckerd. First pitch for Wednesday's single game is set for 7:00 p.m.
