WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Saint Leo softball team (22-29, 9-13 SSC) fell in their series-opener to the No. 10-ranked Rollins College Tars  (41-4, 21-1 SSC) 6-1, in Sunshine State Conference action Tuesday evening from Winter Park, Fla. The loss snaps the Lions three-game winning streak,

Leading the way for Saint Leo was Tiffinee Harvey, as she led the club with two hits, including her record-setting 22nd double of the year. Dianne Gonzalez collected an RBI double, while Ana Castillo went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Sarah Boyd rounded-out the Lions hit total with a single to right field.

Despite the final outcome, it was a historic start to the Lions top half of the first inning as Harvey blasted a record-setting double over the right fielder’s head, solidifying her 22nd two-bagger of 2010. It breaks the previous single-season record of 21 that Harvey set one year and one day ago. Despite the double, the Lions couldn’t capitalize on their early scoring opportunity.

The Tars, however, broke-out on top in the bottom of first inning as Christine Roser collected her 45th RBI of the seasonon a sacrifice fly to leftfield.

With a 1-0 lead in the third inning, Rollins extended their advantage when Jessica Moreland lifted a three-run home run over the centerfield fence to give the Tars the 4-0 lead.

The Green & Gold refused to go down quietly, however, as back-to-back singles by Castillo and Harvey, led to Gonzalez sending a sharp, two-out double to the wall to trim the lead to 4-1.

Unfortunately, SLU could not carry the momentum into the bottom half of the inning as Tars’  Lauren Caldwell and Amber Pederson connected on back-to-back homers to push the score to 6-1.

The Lions mounted a comeback attempt in the sixth, but SLU could not capitalize on a two-on, two-out situation.

Tars’ starter Kristen Frame made the 6-1 lead stand as she went the distance, while striking out 17 Saint Leo batters.

Ashton Whidden took the loss for SLU, falling to 16-14.

Saint Leo returns to action on Tuesday morning to conclude the 2010 regular season schedule and their series with Tars in an SSC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. with game two to follow after.
