FLORENCE, S.C. – The Saint Leo softball team (14-15) closed out the Francis Marion Invitational with a 6-2 loss to the Armstrong Atlantic Pirates (20-6), Sunday afternoon from the Freedom Florence Softball Complex. The region loss handed the Lions their fifth-straight defeat.

Saint Leo posted eight hits on the afternoon, including a 2-for-2 performance from Sarah Boyd. Elysha Agen also delivered on a pair of singles for the Lions, and Brittany Yates cracked her 10th home run of the season. Jaime Walker, Ana Castillo, and Amber Martyn also collected hits. In the loss, the Lions left nine players on base.

For the first time in the invitational the Lions were picked as the visitors. Still, the bats could not get rolling as they held scoreless over the first six innings. Unfortunately, that didn’t hold true for the Pirates’ bats connecting on 10 hits and scoring all their runs over their first four frames.

Armstrong used two hits in the second inning to score their first run, as well scoring two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth inning.

Saint Leo left runners on base in each of the first six innings, but Yates turned that around in the final frame when she blasted her 10th home run of the season and 23rd of her career to make the score 6-2.

Saint Leo will now begin home, spring break action on Wednesday, March 17 as Francis Marion comes to University Field for a non-conference showdown beginning at 1:00 p.m.
