SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University softball team (26-18, 5-8 SSC) dropped a 2-0 Sunshine State Conference decision to the University of Tampa (22-6, 9-2 SSC), Saturday evening from University Field. After collecting a single in the first inning, the Lions’ offense went dormant as they were held hitless the remainder of the game.

Tampa struck with what proved to be the game-winning run on a first inning sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 1-0.  Tatiana Casis tried to spark the Lions’ offense in the bottom half of the inning, connecting on a single to leftfield. Unfortunately, it was all the Lions were able to muster as Tampa ace Deanna Henriott put the Lions mighty offense down in order the rest of the game.

With the Lions offense quiet, Tampa brought home an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 2-0, the final margin of victory.

The two runs proved to be enough as Saint Leo could not answer Tampa’s challenge once again in seventh inning.

Henriott closed out the game by collecting her eighth and ninth strikeouts on the afternoon, while solidifying her 14th victory of the season.

Senior hurler Ashley Urbanik (15-15) also had a strong game in the circle for the Green and Gold. She went seven complete innings, striking out nine Spartans and surrendering two runs on five hits in the conference defeat.

The Lions return to field on Sunday, April 5 for an SSC doubleheader against the very same Spartans with first pitch coming at 1:00 pm from University Field.
