SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University softball team (25-13, 4-3 SSC) fell to the Barry University Buccaneers (21-9, 6-1 SSC), 3-0 Friday night from University Field. Saint Leo was only able to collect three hits in the seven inning contest, while the Bucs were able to punch through 11.

Barry capitalized on their chances early in the game, as a Natalie Heeley double plated two runs in the first inning. SLU got off to promising start as well, as Elysha Agen and Brittany Yates collected a pair of singles in the bottom half of the first inning. Still, with two on and one out, the Lions were not able to convert the base runners into runs.

After a scoreless second inning, Barry tallied a third run on a single by Heeley, as she drove in her third and final RBI of the night.

The powerful offense of the Lions remained quiet the next three and half innings. Still, the Green and Gold tried their best to get a rally started against the Bucs’ ace in the bottom of the seventh. Tatiana Casis led the inning off with a single to left field followed by an Ally Maddox walk two batters later. However, the Lions were not able to convert runners into runs again as they fell by the final score of 3-0.

Lions’ started Ashley Urbanik (15-11) went all seven innings for Saint Leo. She surrendered 11 hits and three earned runs while striking out four Barry players.

Saint Leo struggled to get to Jack (14-5) at any point of the night, as she recorded her fifth straight shutout while striking out eight Lions.

The loss snaps the Lions four-game winning streak.

Saint Leo gets another crack at Barry tomorrow afternoon from University Field as they will take on the Bucs in doubleheader action. First pitch of the SSC twin bill is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
