Saint Leo, Fla. (May 7, 2008) – Saint Leo University softball player Ashley Urbanik (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) was named the 2008 Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year, it was announced Wednesday by SSC Commissioner Michael J. Marcil.  Urbanik was also a First Team selection along with Tatiana Casis (Jr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.), while Ally Maddox (Jr., Brandon, Fla.) and Amanda Patrick (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) were named Second Team All-SSC.

Urbanik proved to be one of the most versatile players in the league in 2008, posting impressive numbers both at the plate and in the circle. Offensively, she batted .315 and tied for the conference lead with 14 home runs. She also tied for fourth with 44 RBI and tied for seventh with 36 runs scored. Her .658 slugging percentage was fifth among SSC batters. In the circle, Urbanik compiled a 25-8 record. She ranked first with 230 strikeouts and 206.1 innings pitched. Urbanik's 25 wins were second in the SSC, while her 1.09 ERA ranked third.

Urbanik was selected to the First Team as a pitcher, appearing on the First Team for the first time after being a Second Team All-SSC selection last year and earning Honorable Mention honors as a freshman.  Casis was the First Team shortstop after matching Urbanik with 14 RBI and leading the Lions with 46 RBI in the regular season.

Maddox earned All-Conference honors for the first time in her three-year career as the first baseman on the 2008 Second Team.  Patrick was the Second Team catcher after a sensational freshman season.

Barry University's Amber Jack was chosen SSC Pitcher of the Year. Rollins' Christine Roser was tabbed Freshman of the Year, and Barry's Danielle Penner received Coach of the Year honors rounding out the special awards in 2008.

Voting for the All-Conference Softball Team was conducted among the league's softball coaches and sports information directors.
