Saint Leo, Fla. (April 28, 2008) – Saint Leo University softball players Ashley Urbanik (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) and Tatiana Casis (Jr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) were named SSC Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively, it was announced Monday by SSC Commissioner Michael J. Marcil.
The pair helped Saint Leo (35-13, 14-7 SSC) win a pair of conference series and finish tied for second in the SSC regular season standings.
Urbanik posted a 3-1 record for the week including her first save of the season. She tossed four complete games, including a shutout. In 28.2 innings, Urbanik allowed three earned runs on 18 hits and 13 walks with 18 strikeouts. Her complete-game shutout came in a 2-0 win at No. 15 Rollins, as she allowed just two hits and two walks with three strikeouts. She also didn't allow an earned run in the Lions’ 3-1 victory over Nova Southeastern, surrendering five hits, four walks and fanning five. She concluded the week with a 0.73 ERA.
Casis, the Lions junior infielder, led Saint Leo to a 5-1 week, including SSC series wins at No. 15 Rollins College and against Nova Southeastern. In six games, she batted .400 with three runs, six RBI, three doubles, and two home runs. She hit safely in five games. Casis was 2-for-4 with a home run and drove in both runs in the Lions' 2-0 finale win at Rollins. In an 8-2 game two win versus NSU, she was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, driving in two runs. For the week, Casis recorded a .850 slugging percentage and a .429 OBP.
Saint Leo student-athletes have now claimed a total of 29 SSC Player of the Week honors in the 2007-08 season, and 32 Athletes of the Week overall. Urbanik earned SSC Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time this season, and was also named Player of the Week once this season for a total of four conference weekly awards. Meanwhile, Casis received Player of the Week honors for the first time this season.
The Saint Leo softball team awaits word to see if it will be one of the eight teams selected in the NCAA South Region Tournament. The dates for the South Region tournament are May 7-11. Times and site for the tournament are yet to be determined.
