Saint Leo, Fla. (April 25, 2008) – The Saint Leo softball team (33-13, 12-7 SSC) defeated the Nova Southeastern Sharks (43-18, 12-7 SSC) by the score of 3-1 at University Field Friday evening.

Ashley Urbanik (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) was solid on the mound, as she scattered five hits gave up four walks and struck out five Sharks in the complete game. Urbanik (24-8) also helped herself out at the plate going 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Tatiana Casis (Jr., Part St. Lucie, Fla.) also contributed on the evening going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.  April Slate (Sr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.), Ally Maddox (Jr., Brandon, Fla.) and Aamnda Patrick (Fr., Tampa., Fla.) each added a single apiece in the victory.

After Nova Southeastern jumped out to an early 1-0 on a passed ball, Saint Leo struck right back in the bottom of the first, as Casis laced a two-run double to left centerfield putting the Lions up 2-1.

Urbanik extended the Lions lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when she launched a solo home run around the leftfield foul poll putting the Lions up 3-1. The shot was Urbanik’s 13th home run of the season, tying Casis for the team lead.

Urbanik pitched her way out of numerous jams, including a seventh inning threat by the Sharks when they put runners on first and second before Urbanik shut the door on Nova Southeastern striking out the final hitter of the game.

The Lion left five runners on base and committed one error while the Sharks left nine runners on base and committed two errors.

The Lions continue their SSC match-up with Nova Southeastern Saturday, April 26 with the doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at University Field. Tomorrow also marks senior day and each of the six Lions’ seniors will be honored in between games one and two of the doubleheader.
