Saint Leo, Fla. (April 15, 2007) – The Saint Leo University softball team (27-20, 9-9 SSC) fell 3-2 in 11 innings to the visiting Barry University Buccaneers (37-11, 11-4 SSC) in the final game of a three-game Sunshine State Conference series on Sunday.
Barry completed a sweep of the series with the victory, as the extra inning contest was the second of the series following a 1-0 Barry win in a 10-inning game one on Saturday. The start of Sunday’s game was delayed three hours because of rain earlier in the day.
Saint Leo was led by a trio of players with two-hit games. Erin Brunt (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Ally Maddox (So., Brandon, Fla.) was 2-for-5 and April Slate (Jr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) was 2-for-4.
The Bucs took the lead in the contest by scoring a pair of runs in the third inning. Saint Leo rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh inning with Slate getting on base with a one-out single. The Lions then staged their rally with two outs, as Slate scored on an RBI double by Ali Flynn (Sr., Miami, Fla.), and pinch-runner Julia Lampe (Jr., Oak Creek, Wis.) scored on an RBI single from Brunt to send the game into extra innings.
An RBI single by Barry’s Shyla Rider in the top of the 11th inning provided the game-winning run for the Bucs, and secured a sweep of the weekend series.
Saint Leo starter Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) tossed her third straight complete-game extra inning loss. She fell to 18-11 on the year, despite allowing three runs (two earned) on 11 hits in the 11-inning contest. Barry’s Amber Jack (21-7) was the winner, as she worked the final 4.1 innings in relief of starter Liz Bennett.
Saint Leo will host the University of Tampa next weekend in another SSC series. The teams will meet in a single game on Friday night (7:00 p.m.) and then play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
