Lakeland, Fla. (April 4, 2007) – The Saint Leo University softball team (26-15, 8-5 SSC) lost 7-4 to No. 14 Florida Southern College (35-9, 8-2) in the opening game of a three-game Sunshine State Conference series at Barnett Field on Wednesday night.
Saint Leo was led by senior catcher Erin Brunt (Clearwater, Fla.) who went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI and a pair of runs scored. LF Hayley Mallory (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) was also 3-for-4 on the night with a run scored.
The loss ended a six-game SSC winning streak for the Lions, as Florida Southern won its 15th straight home game. The Moccasins were led by 1B Jackie Leppla’s 4-for-4 performance, as she finished with two RBI and a run. Catcher Leah English was also 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Florida Southern jumped in front with single runs in each of the first three innings, before Saint Leo narrowed the gap to two with a run in the fourth.
The Lions took their first lead of the night with a three-run fifth inning, which included a two-run triple by Brunt. Ally Maddox (So., Brandon, Fla.) brought Brunt home with a single later in the inning, giving SLU a 4-3 lead. However, the Mocs regained the lead in the sixth, scoring four runs on five hits to rally for the win.
FSC starter Megan Brown picked up the win, improving to 21-5 on the year with her 22nd complete-game effort of the year. Meanwhile, Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) picked up the loss for the Lions, falling to 17-8 with her 22nd complete-game of 2007.
The same two teams will battle again tomorrow, playing a doubleheader to conclude their three-game SSC series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Barnett Field.
