Saint Leo, Fla. (March 24, 2007) – The Saint Leo University softball team (23-12, 5-4 SSC) moved a game over .500 in the Sunshine State Conference with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Eckerd College (13-25, 1-11 SSC) on Saturday afternoon.  The Lions won game one 6-3 before finishing off a sweep of the weekend series with a 9-1 five-inning win in game two.

Saint Leo was led by senior Hayley Mallory (Plant City, Fla.) who went a combined 4-for-7 with an RBI and three runs on Saturday.  Ali Flynn (Dr., Miami, Fla.) added a 2-for-6 performance with three RBI on the day.  Eckerd’s Amy McGathay was a combined 3-for-7 with an RBI and a run in the doubleheader.

The Lions took the lead in the first inning of game one, as Mallory led off the game with a single and later scored on a ground out by Erin Brunt (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.).  Saint Leo stretched its lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the second with Shelly Bartlett (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) and Flynn registering an RBI.

Eckerd battled back with a run in the fifth and then tied the score with back-to-back RBI doubles by Leslie Bryan and McGathay in the sixth.  Saint Leo grabbed the lead for good with a three-run sixth inning.  An RBI double by Flynn capped off the scoring and provided the final margin.

The Tritons opened the scoring in game two with a run in the first, but Saint Leo quickly regained control with four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Heather Stroud (Jr., San Antonio, Fla.) delivered the biggest hit of the inning with a two-run double.

The Lions added to their lead in the third when Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) belted a two-run homer over the left field fence.  Flynn delivered another RBI single in the fifth before pinch hitter Chrissy Clingan (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) ended the game with an RBI single that also scored Stroud with the final run of the day.

Saint Leo will host Valdosta State University on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. doubleheader.  VSU is currently ranked 13th in the latest NFCA Top-25 poll.
