Saint Leo, Fla. (March 23, 2007) – Sophomore starter Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout to help the Saint Leo softball team (21-12, 3-4) win for the 13th time in the last 14 games, and open a three-game SSC series with a 4-0 win over Eckerd College (13-23, 1-9 SSC) on Friday night.
Urbanik struck out eight en route to her sixth shutout of the season, and her 17th complete game in 18 starts. Senior SS Alison Flynn (Miami, Fla.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while Ally Maddox (So., Brandon, Fla.) was 2-for-3 in the game.
The Lions got on the board in the first inning, as LF Hayley Mallory (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) led off the inning with a single. Flynn then attempted to bunt Mallory to second and reached when the throw sailed over the second baseman’s head at first. Mallory scored on the play and Flynn advanced to third. Flynn then scored on a wild pitch to give Saint Leo a 2-0 lead.
SLU added to its lead in the fifth, as Shelley Bartlett (Jr. Sarasota, Fla.) led off the inning with a double. She later scored on an RBI single by Flynn, and the Lions added an insurance run in the sixth to seal the win.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow in a doubleheader to round out their three-game SSC series. The first game will begin at 1:00 p.m. at University Field.
