Saint Leo, Fla. (March 21, 2007) – The Saint Leo University softball team (20-12) split a doubleheader with No. 14 Caldwell College (7-3) on Wednesday night at University Field. The Lions won game one 2-1 before having their 12-game winning streak snapped with a 3-1 loss in the second game.
Saint Leo was led by DP/1B Ally Maddox (So., Brandon, Fla.) who went a combined 3-for-5 with an RBI and had what proved to be the game-winning home run with a solo shot in the sixth inning of the opening game.
The Lions fell behind in the first inning of game one, as Caldwell scored the opening run on an RBI double by Jackie Velardi.
SLU battled back to tie the score in the fifth with a two-out RBI single by Alison Flynn (Sr., Miami, Fla.). The Lions then took the lead with what proved to be the game-winning run, as Maddox led off the sixth inning with her team-leading fourth home run of the season.
Saint Leo starter Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) picked up the game one win, as she struck out eight in a complete-game effort to improve to 12-6. Caldwell starter Nicole Webb was saddled with the loss, falling to 2-2 on the year.
In game two, Caldwell jumped on top early, as the Cougars scored each of their three runs in the opening inning. An RBI double with two outs by Stacy Falkowski got things started, and two more runs scored on a defensive error and an RBI single by Alyssa Speno.
Saint Leo scored a run in the third, as Heather Stroud (Jr., San Antonio, Fla.) led off the inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. However, the Lions could rally no closer down the stretch, as Kristen de la Campa (3-1) picked up the win for the visitors. Kiki VonHolt (Jr., New Port Richey, Fla.) was on the losing end for the first time in her last six starts, falling to 7-6.
Saint Leo will return to Sunshine State Conference action this weekend with a three-game series against Eckerd College at home. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 7:00 p.m. before playing at Saturday doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
