Lakeland, Fla. (March 10, 2007) – The Saint Leo softball team (11-11) swept a doubleheader with the University of North Alabama (15-7) on Saturday evening at Florida Southern College’s Barnett Field in Lakeland, Fla. The Lions won game one 1-0 before wrapping up the win with a second consecutive shutout and a 3-0 win in game two.
Saint Leo pitchers Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) and Kiki VonHolt (Jr., New Port Richey, Fla.) combined to throw 14 shutout innings and allowed just four hits each. Urbanik tossed her second shutout of the season in game one to improve to 8-6, while VonHolt posted her third shutout in game two to improve her overall mark to 3-5.
The Lions scored the only run of game one in the first inning when Hayley Mallory (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) scored on a double steal after leading off with a single, moving over on a sacrifice bunt and stealing third. The run was all Urbanik would need, as she allowed just four hits and struck out five for the complete-game win.
In game two, Saint Leo scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Catcher Erin Brunt (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) was 2-for-3 with two RBI. April Slate (Jr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) delivered an RBI single in the second, before Brunt delivered an RBI triple in the third and an RBI single in the fifth.
