Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (March 3, 2007) – The Saint Leo University softball team (4-10, 2-4 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader at Nova Southeastern University (9-11, 1-2 SSC) on Saturday afternoon. The Lions won game one 2-1 in nine innings before falling 6-4 in the second contest.
The Lions opened the scoring in the first game with a run in the fourth. A leadoff double by Ali Flynn (Sr., Miami, Fla.) was followed by a single by Erin Brunt (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.). Flynn then scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
NSU forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brunt then led off the ninth with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Van Tassel (Sr., Valparaiso, Fla.). Brunt scored on the next play when Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) delivered what proved to be the game-winning run on an RBI double.
Urbanik evened her record at 4-4 with the first game victory, as she went the complete-game for the second straight outing. She did not allow an earned run, scattered six hits and struck out five.
Saint Leo again opened a lead in the second half of the twinbill, as the Lions scored three runs in the second. A two-run single by Heather Stroud was the key hit in the inning.
Once again, the Sharks tied the score late with a three-run sixth. However, the Lions regained their lead in the seventh when LF Hayley Mallory (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) delivered an RBI triple, scoring pinch runner Shelley Bartlett (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.).
The Sharks rallied again in the bottom of the seventh, and 1B Katie Veltri delivered the winning runs with a walk-off three-run home run. Urbanik took the loss (4-5) in relief of starter Kiki VonHolt (Jr., New Port Richey, Fla.).
The Lions return home on Tuesday, March 6 to face Salem International University in a doubleheader. Game one will begin at 5:00 p.m. at University Field.
