Ft. Myers, Fla. (February 11, 2007) – The Saint Leo softball team (1-5) was swept in a road doubleheader by Florida Gulf Coast University (7-1) on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex in Ft. Myers, Fla. The Lions fell 3-1 in game one before losing the second game 3-0.
A three-run home run by FGCU’s Desiree Miller in the bottom of the first inning was all the Eagles needed to pick up the win in the opening contest. Saint Leo’s lone run came when Hayley Mallory (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch in the third.
The Lions fell despite a solid effort on the mound by starter Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.). She struck out nine and allowed the three runs on six hits in six innings of work, falling to 1-2 on the season.
In game two, the Eagles scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. FGCU then added an insurance run in the fourth to complete the doubleheader sweep and stretch its winning streak to four games.
Saint Leo has a 10-day break before its next game, as the Lions will return to the diamond on February 21 when they open their Sunshine State Conference schedule at Florida Tech. The game will be played at BCC.
The single game will be followed by a doubleheader between the two on February 22 at 2:00 p.m. at Tech.
