Saint Leo, Fla. (January 23, 2007) - The Saint Leo softball team was picked to finish fourth in the Sunshine State Conference Pre-Season Softball Poll, released recently by the SSC.
The Lions, who have reached the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament in four of the last seven seasons, finished 2006 with a 37-20 record overall. Saint Leo’s conference mark of 16-8 was good for a third-place finish in the league.
Defending SSC champion and NCAA third-place finisher Florida Southern College was selected as the pre-season favorite to win the 2007 Sunshine State Conference softball championship. Florida Southern earned 17 of a possible 18 first-place votes in the pre-season poll. Barry University received the remaining first place vote and was picked to finish second.
Florida Tech was selected to finish third, while SLU and Rollins College were picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. The University of Tampa, Nova Southeastern University, Lynn University and Eckerd College rounded out the poll.
The Saint Leo softball team will open its 2007 season in Valdosta, Ga. on February 3-4. The Lions will face Delta State and Valdosta State on both days with game starting at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
